The Story of SoFish
The School of Forming Intentions, Shaping Humanity was dreamed up and created by Paul Kucharyson. Whilst in Art School, studying Art Education, learning about all the different types of art, also working as a massage therapist and a handy man.
As a father I wrote a children’s book with my daughter called Fish and Bull, writing the book inspired me and I created SoFish. The book inspired the whole Sofish brand. There are so many lesson plans in it, it’s about collaboration, friendship, acceptance, growth, reaching for your dreams, also more creatively: story telling, wood block printing, paper making – It’s about creative connections and what’s possible with imagination and working together.
When I was young, 14 years old, I went through some stuff, it was my art teacher that, through a portrait project, helped me look at myself, learn and grow. I went from a 1.0 to 3.0 grade in one somester. I’m quite sure my life would have taken a very different path if it had not been for that art teacher.
I came into contact with many people over the years who ran homeschools, and wished they had more connections. I met a lot of teachers that spent their own money on art supplies, lesson plans and field trips etc. I loved meeting different people with creative connections, and it gave me a burning desire to help art teachers and creatives. Over the years I’ve done lots of different jobs but this has always been on my mind. I wanted to give back. Especially to art teachers.
The years I worked as a massage therapist I helped a lot of people. Not just doing physical work on their body but also working through their creative mind, their other issues. I thought it could be connected somehow to drawing or painting in some way, this was probably an early form of art therapy so the inventing of SoFish is a combination of the ideas that I’ve developed from my journey that got me through life. From art teachers to massage therapy, coaching received and given all put together to make SoFish. Where teachers can support each other, connect and teach not only students but other teachers, and create collaborative opportunities. Teaching art gives a reflection on both personal and relational levels and when you understand the process of making and teaching art it enhances the building of yourself. Of healing and growing yourself. There is so much self development that comes out of art and it is beneficial to everybody. Each person has at least one thing they are really good at doing, that they are already doing, SoFish will give them the opportunity to share that knowledge and also make a little extra money at the same time.
Whilst at college I created intention portraits, which really for me was like a therapy, really self reflective, it combined my own self development and personal growth with really awesome creative artwork. I imagined the intention portraits being a future project that anybody could do. I thought it would be awesome to have others do these portraits all over the world. Even back then, ten years ago I dreamt of connecting people and bringing them together to create the worlds largest sculpture made from all their intention portraits. I wondered how cool it would be if I could see a class in another part of the world or be a part of it. I thought how awesome would it be to have an online art school. Then work and looking after people got in the way, but maybe it was a good thing, because the technology would have been so much harder back then. Now due to a work injury and being forced to stay at home I found the time and energy to bring SoFish to life.
